14 youth dance groups from across the country selected to perform alongside the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland at Destinations 2017.

YDance Routes Destinations is an annual showcase of the best youth dance companies from across Scotland. The event, held this year at Tramway, Glasgow on Saturday 4th March, brings together national youth dance talent in an exciting evening of diverse performances.

The 14 groups taking part were carefully selected by YDance (Scotland’s national youth dance organisation) through an application process after the company was inundated with submissions from talented groups. Those chosen come from as far away as Skye, the Highlands and Inverurie.

Audiences can expect an entertaining programme of contemporary, street, ballet, jazz, Bharatanatyam, modern, and even Charleston dance styles from some of Scotland’s best dance groups aged between 12 and 21.

The evening will also include the premiere of the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland’s new piece for 2017, Re|place (Or, the thing I miss most), choreographed by Jerwood Award-winner Yael Flexer. The Company has worked tirelessly to create the piece which looks at replacement, or even displacement, and the things you might miss as a result of moving away from home. After Destinations, NYDCS will embark on a 2017 tour which includes a performance at the Dance Bridges Festival in Kolkata, India.

Carolyn Lappin, Executive Director of YDance said:

“The 2017 YDance Routes Destinations platform is the sixth annual event showcasing the excellent range of youth dance happening all over Scotland. The 14 groups taking part are just the tip of the iceberg – youth dance is flourishing across the country and YDance is pleased to be able to support and develop Scotland’s youth dance network all year round. National youth dance programmes like YDance Routes give young dancers the chance to meet like-minded young people from different parts of Scotland, share skills and experiences, and showcase their talent on a main stage. Destinations also gives audiences the chance to experience the future of dance performance in Scotland.”

There will be an added competitive element this year as YDance and industry body One Dance UK will work in partnership to offer two groups from Scotland the chance to perform at the National Youth Dance Festival, U.Dance 2017 in Birmingham on the 13th to 16th July. Selection of the two Scottish groups will be made at Destinations.

Claire Somerville, Head of Children and Young People’s Dance at One Dance UK said:

“I’m really looking forward to watching this year’s Destinations platform; it’s always a dynamic showcase of talented young dancers. Building on our ongoing partnership with YDance, we’re pleased to be selecting two Scottish youth dance groups at Destinations who will join hundreds of dancers to perform on the Birmingham Hippodrome main stage in July at U.Dance 2017.”
