Reconnect 2021

Reconnect is a weekend of FREE live online workshops and filmed performances to celebrate and connect young dancers in Scotland.

Taking place over Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th June 2021 via Zoom, Reconnect offers young dancers and youth dance companies from across Scotland the opportunity to come together to learn, share, connect and have fun!

Reconnect is formed of two parts:

Reconnect Workshops

With a range of live workshops, panel discussions and filmed performances, Reconnect will enable young dancers aged 12 – 21 to try new dance styles, meet new people, develop their dance skills and understanding of dance as a career, and watch filmed performances and dance films from some of Scotland’s best youth dance groups and young dancers. Participants have the option to book either Saturday, Sunday or for the full weekend.

Group Welcome & Warm Up

Swing/Lindy Hop Workshop
An African-American dance that originated in New York in the late 1920’s. Lindy Hop is a form of swing dance that evolved in conjunction with jazz music, but also incorporates many other forms of dance such as tap, breakaway, Charleston and jazz.

Bollywood Workshop
This Indian dance style can often be seen in Bollywood movies and can be a combination of traditional and modern dance styles such as Kathak, Indian folk and western styles. It can be fast, powerful and energetic.

Professional Careers in Dance – Panel Discussion and Q&A
This panel of industry experts will be from a range of backgrounds; Artistic Director, Dance Manager and Dance Teacher. They will talk about their journey into dance, how they progressed their career and their advice on working in the dance sector.

Choreography Workshops
These sessions will be a combination of sharing repertoire from the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland and highlighting the work of national and international choreographers. Other workshops will focus on the theme of connection and will explore a range of choreographic devices and structures when creating group dances.

Performance Showcase
An exciting showcase of dance films and performances submitted by Scotland’s young dancers and Youth Dance Companies.

Group Welcome & Warm Up

Jumpstyle Workshop
A type of dancing developed in Belgium from a form of kicking martial arts. This became popular in early 2000 as it was used in music videos and by urban artists. It consists of fast paced different jumps and kicks usually using electronic or rave music. 

Commercial Workshop
This dance refers to dancing performed in pop artists live shows, music videos and movies. There are many different styles of dance that can be worked into commercial dance, such as jazz, locking, popping, breakdancing, krumping, street dance and more.

Young People’s Pathways into Dance – Panel Discussion and Q&A
This panel will represent young people’s journeys into dance, with individuals from different contexts from a dance placement, a student at dance university and from the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland.

Choreography Workshops
These sessions will be a combination of sharing repertoire from the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland, highlighting the work of national and international choreographers. Other workshops will focus on the theme of connection and will explore a range of choreographic devices and structures when creating group dances.

Performance Showcase
An exciting showcase of dance films and performances submitted by Scotland’s young dancers and Youth Dance Companies.

Reconnect Performances

Young dancers or youth dance groups from across Scotland are invited to submit a dance film or filmed dance performance to be showcased at Reconnect. Your entry should be either a dance film featuring dancers recording sections remotely and edited together, or a piece created and filmed pre-lockdown in a studio or theatre which has not been widely showcased. Dance students may also submit solo or group work which may have been used for school and college assessments. Our judging panel will select a number of these submissions to be showcased over the weekend to Reconnect Workshop participants.

Reconnect U.Dance EXCLUSIVE!

Reconnect is the only U.Dance regional qualifier in Scotland. YDance and industry body One Dance UK will work in partnership to select a number of films from Scotland to be showcased at the U.Dance 2021 Festival. Selection of the Scottish films will be made at Reconnect.  

Eligibility

To take part in Reconnect Workshops:

  • You must be aged 12 – 21

To take part in Reconnect Performances:

  • You or your youth dance group must be based in Scotland
  • All dancers must be aged 12 – 21 (dancers with disabilities can be aged up to 25)
  • Your dance piece must be between 2 – 7 minutes long
  • Your entry should be either a dance film featuring dancers recording sections remotely and edited together or a piece created and filmed pre-lockdown in a studio or theatre which has not been widely showcased. College students may also submit solo or group work which has been submitted for assessment.

There is no cost to take part in Reconnect 2021 – it’s FREE!

Application and booking process

Reconnect Workshops

To book your place on the Reconnect Workshops please complete the Reconnect Workshops Booking Form. Booking deadline is Sunday 23rd May.

Reconnect Performances

Applications for Reconnect Performances should be made by group leaders or the choreographer of the piece by completing the Reconnect Performances Application Form. Application and film submission deadline is Sunday 23rd May.

Please note you will also be required to submit your completed film. This must be done by uploading your piece to Google Drive, We Transfer or Dropbox and emailing the link to lauren@ydance.org

Once applications close, a number of films will be selected to be showcased at Reconnect. The selection panel will select dance pieces which will create a programme that:

  • Reflects the diversity of dance styles practiced across Scotland
  • Demonstrates excellence in performance
  • Showcases engaging and exciting choreography that gives young people clear ownership of the movement, relevant to their age and experience, and is authentic and empowering
  • Reflects the geographic spread of the sector
